We started our visit in Las Cruces with dinner out at High Desert Brewing, a place known for good beer and good burgers. We agree with both. They also make their own root beer. Decades ago, Bob acquired a taste for sassafras from his grandmother who made tea as a spring tonic. Good root beer should taste like sassafras. Bad root beer tastes like sugar. Bob has made both at home (thanks Rem) and HDBs went down very nicely.
Our only other stop was the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum near the campus of New Mexico State University. The museum showcases agriculture from First People to present day. For us, one of the most interesting things was the sculpture Watering Place out on the “back 20” outside. Our guide explained that 1% of funds to non-profits, etc. must be used for art. His final statement on the matter: “This is our 1%.” It is 1” thick steel with cut-outs offset to create shadows. Panels depict various scenes of farm and ranch life.
Inside, among other things, we were taken by this butterfly quilt.
We were on a short-lived quest for pecans. Unfortunately, most of what is being planted and promoted is pistachios. Oh, well…
Sunny Acres was a lot like many other RV parks in the area, a flat gravel parking lot with power posts. Overall, it was a nice spot for a few days but not quite close enough to walk into old Mesilla. Groceries and other necessities are close by. There is an industrial area behind us that would have been quite noisy had our stay not been during the week between Christmas and New Years.
