Vidalia is across the river from Natchez. The park is situated just behind the levee. Lights on the bridge and in Natchez provide a nighttime backdrop for the river; day brings many barges and tow boats.
We visited Stanton Hall, an imposing 1850’s house occupying an entire city block. Unfortunately, no photos allowed.
We also stopped at Historic Jefferson College, which was the first institution of higher learning in the Mississippi territories and the site of its constitutional convention. It wasn’t too successful as a college (fewer than 5 documented graduates) but lived on as a prep school. Restoration is in progress and one building is open, though sparsely furnished.
We left for Vicksburg via the Natchez Trace Parkway, a pleasant and peaceful drive through the countryside.
The northern end of the campground, while higher in elevation and with much better views of river traffic, was also quite noisy with a steady parade of cars and trucks (local residents) going through the campground to a private event on Friday until very late. After complaining about the noise to staff, nothing was done and the whole scene repeated on Saturday night. We’d think twice before going back.
