Natchez State Park, Natchez, Mississippi

Our next stop was Natchez, Mississippi. They have a beautiful visitor center right next to the Mississippi River. We drove their suggested route through town and saw a bunch of old mansions. We stopped at Melrose, run by the National Park Service, for a tour. The house still had much of its original furnishings and the NPS had replicated textiles and wallpaper to resemble the originals. From the outside, the house looked like it had a limestone base and huge limestone columns, with brickwork for the rest of the structure. It turned out that the whole thing was brick, with parts covered in stucco and faux finished to look like limestone. Inside, woodwork made of cypress was painted to look like oak or marble. The grounds weren’t much to look at and several of the outbuildings were closed, but it was worth the stop.

Natchez State Park was our stop last night. Nice park with some very nice people and some not so nice. The not so nice ones had three dogs that barked constantly, parked three trucks on two sites and the grass, tied a boat off on the lake below our site and then proceeded to make several trips through our site to get to it. I’ll assume they didn’t want to pay for a site on the water…

On the other hand, several staff in the park office were very friendly, helpful and quite courteous.

Bathhouse was new. Facilities were clean. Plenty of hot water. Good cell service. Several OTA stations but we used satellite anyway. No Wi-Fi.
