We arrived in the middle of the afternoon. Many very destructive storms and tornado activity east of us. Campground was on the western side of Shreveport. Since the worst of the storms were through our area, we decided to go into downtown to see one of the two places we wanted to go on our visit. Stop number one was the Shreveport Water Works Museum. Sign on the gate said “We’re on vacation. Call …”
Fine, we move on to number two on our list, the J Bennett Johnston Waterway Regional Visitor Center run by the Army Corps of Engineers. That’s the long way to say “History and Management of the Red River.” But strike two. It was also closed. No sign here, though. Rather than risking a strike three, we decided to go grocery shopping and head back to the campground.
We called both places when we got back. Water Works Museum would be closed the next day. COE visitor center would be open. Arrived in about 15 minutes to find about half a dozen school busses and thought we’d run into a major field trip. But no, the doors were once again locked. Shreveport seemed like a ghost town. We didn’t see more than about twenty people during both trips into downtown. We left very dissapointed.
Campground was on the old side. internal roads were in need of some TLC. Bathrooms were showing their age but very clean and lots of hot water. Wi-Fi was solid as was cell service. Cable was useless due to a loose connector. Several others in the same row were in a similar condition. Sites were mostly rather short very level concrete pads. Anything much bigger than us and you’d have to choose between front or back wheels on and then you’d be quite a bit out of level.
