Harrison Bay State Park, Harrison, Tennessee

Temperatures at our first two stop this year were not sufficient to allow a decent walk but today was different so we put on our heavy jackets and headed out. The first thing we noticed after leaving the van was our welcoming committee, a contingent of bluebirds was flitting back and forth between the tree and the ground almost as if drawing our attention. Then, just as quickly as they had appeared, they were gone.

The trailhead was easy to find but the trail quickly turned rocky and would have been quite navigable but the thick layer of fall leaves made it almost impossible to see the softball-sized ankle twisters before damage was done so we turned around once we hit the water and started back toward the campground. On the way, we heard and finally spotted a woodpecker hammering away on a dead tree. We watched for a few seconds and then left him to enjoy his dinner.

We thought that would be the end of our wildlife but right in front of our site were three deer grazing and slowly crossing into the trees ahead of us. The adults picked their heads up when they weren’t sure we were harmless but resumed once we were inside. A very nice walk, indeed.

And, last but not least, a nice sunset behind our site.

Site: A15. The campground itself hasn’t changed much. Always clean. There’s still Tengo Internet. Good Verizon service and more than thirty OTA channels.
