Gilbert Ray Campground, Tucson, Arizona

Once we figured out that the published map was out of date and useless, we enjoyed walking on the trails here. We discovered signs along the trails with a more up to date map, which we promptly photographed and used for planning. We’re not sure why the park continues to distribute something that doesn’t agree with the facts on the ground.

The campground was very full on the weekend and much quieter during the week. The only negative here is the long drive needed to reach a decent supermarket. Our fridge just can’t hold 7 days worth of food.

One of the best features of the area is the daily chance for a spectacular sunset. The clouds have to be right or you just get a low intensity glow. It doesn’t last long but when everything is right, you get a light show like we had on Wednesday night.
