FDR’s Little White House
Franklin D Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio in 1921 at age 39. He first began visiting the Warm Springs area in 1924 for treatments in the springs. Roosevelt founded the Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation in 1927 a year before his election as governor of New York in 1928. He built this modest house during his transition from governor to the 32nd president of the United States. He used the home as a retreat until his death from a stroke in the home on April 12, 1945. The home has been preserved as it was when Roosevelt died and opened as a museum in 1948.
The site also includes a very good museum and the Walk of States. Each state sent a piece of stone to be part of the memorial. Flags were added in 1964.
F D Roosevelt State Park
This is Georgia’s largest state park. Our activities centered on the campground, which includes 140 sites in five loops. We walked around the lake on the Delano Lake Trail well marked in places and not marked in others. One entertaining spot is shown below. Bathrooms quite dated and provided warm water. Spotty cell service and no viewable OTA TV stations where we were (Loop #5).
