The day started with a stop for groceries and gas and everything was going well. We spotted two over-size loads across the road and decided that it would be a real pain to get behind them. It took us about ten minutes to catch up to the first one…

Then a medical emergency of some kind (no accident that we could see) caused a traffic stop for almost an hour, A helicopter circled and then landed on the highway. After the helicopter took off traffic started and we went on our way.

About half an hour later more flashing lights and another slowdown. This time it was a load of gravel spilled over both lanes for nearly 100 yards. We finally arrived at the campground about an hour and a half later, very happy to be off the road.

We were greeted almost before we were parked by a friendly soul named Mike from Temple who visits the campground several times each year. Mike seemed to make the rounds as we were walking around.

Many of the campground reviews said there were lots of deer and turkey roaming around. We didn’t see any until we were leaving in the morning. A group of bucks and a group of does closer to the entrance.

Nice lake views. A bit of noise from nearby Ft Hood but a good night for sleeping. A bit cold in the unheated bathrooms but hot water and a steamy fog fixed that.
