Blue Spring State Park, Orange City, Florida

Donna told us we needed to manifest manatees if we wanted to see them. We helped the process along by going to Blue Spring State Park. This park was created to protect the largest spring on the St Johns river, which pumps out 73 degree water year round. Manatees come here in the winter to keep warm.

Because it was beastly hot, we were unsure if we’d see any manatees. We walked the boardwalk next to the spring that extends to the river. The first time was mid afternoon, and we spotted 2 manatees, but they soon disappeared. Another manatee appeared to be a permanent fixture.

We hoped for better luck the next morning, and were rewarded with views of more than 20 manatees, including a female with 2 youngsters.

The Speed Demon

Though there isn’t much else to do at Blue Spring State Park, it’s well worth visiting to see these beautiful animals.
