Apalachicola is a small fishing town on the Gulf of Mexico. It is famous for its oysters and shrimp. Deb says the oysters are delicious.
We walked through the downtown (there are some nice old buildings), then went to the John Gorrie museum. Dr. Gorrie was a physician in Apalachicola when they had a severe outbreak of yellow fever. Everyone knew that the cause of yellow fever was bad air from the swamps. Dr. Gorrie put his patients in a room and covered the windows, doors, and fireplace to prevent noxious gases from seeping in. He then blew air through a bowl of ice to cool the patient. The treatment worked, and many were cured. Since ice was very expensive, Dr. Gorrie designed a machine to cool he room and make ice — the first air conditioning! Florida would still be a desolate swamp without his invention.
