Only nineteen years old, Jasper Steel was born in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the 36th PA Infantry in Mar of 1864; was captured on May 5 at Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia and died on June 19, 1864 at Andersonville, one of more than 12,000 during the Civil War.
