A Big Wheel RV Park, St Marys, Georgia

Largest Radio Transmission Tube
Largest Radio Transmission Tube

Nice quiet campground with very friendly staff even if you’re the just rolling in without a reservation on Sunday afternoon right before the pot luck dinner. What more could you ask for? How about being right next door to the area’s largest employer, a nuclear sub base?

The only downside would be that there seems to be only one bathroom (not building), for all guests. I guess that it could be expected that all guests will shower in their own RVs but that should be made clear up front. Also, you shouldn’t advertise hot showerS if you only have one.

That being said, our visit to St Marys proper was made enjoyable by a visit to the small but nifty Georgia Radio Museum and Hall of Fame behind the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. One artifact on display was the world’s largest radio transmission tube, made by Machlett Labs (see picture).

Even better, after a leisurely stroll around town, we decided on a stop at Orange Hall to take in some of the local Antebellum architecture. There, we were met by Susie, a transplant from the state of Pennsylvania who invited us to sit a spell while we talked about the house and it’s history. In the middle of our discussion, we met one of Susie’s friends, Judy, a native of St Marys, who graciously entertained us with remembrances of playing in the house as a child. We walked the house and at closing time bid Susie and St Marys farewell.
