White Oak Creek COE, Eufaula, Alabama

This is a great campground on what used to be White Oak Creek on Walter F George Reservoir (Lake Eufaula). Sites are long and most pads are level with great water views. Some sites have incredible slopes and abrupt changes on the approaches so scout your sites first. Our site was right on the water making for the perfect place to bask in the sun for the afternoon. There is a short trail between loops.

National Civil War Naval Museum

The National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus, GA celebrates a sometimes forgotten segment of the Civil War, the Union and Confederate navies. It is the only museum to tell the stories from both sides. The remains of several recovered ships are on display including the CSS Jackson and the CSS Chattahoochee. The Jackson (below) was launched in December 1864 on the Chattahoochee River to await final work. Unfortunately, Union Army soldiers burned the ship down to the water line in April 1865 before she ever saw duty.

The museum has a very detailed timeline of events that could take days to read in its entirety. There is also a large collection of naval flags and other artifacts. Many models built from original drawings are also on display.
