Another nice COE campground with wading birds. We were greeted by an egret and a heron on out way in. The level of Demopolis Lake was high and came up even more over night. The lake is one of six forming the Black Warrior/Tombigbee Waterway. The air carried a bit of the smell from the nearby paper mill. Bathrooms and showers very dated but clean and hot water was appreciated.
We toured Gaineswood plantation house in Demopolis, originally built by Nathan Bryan Whitfield, a General in the North Carolina militia during the Civil War, as dog trot cabin. Whitfield spent eighteen years transforming the log cabin into “grandest plantation house in Alabama.”
