Lubbock is in the high plains section of Texas (about 3000 feet elevation), and the winds here are relentless. Dust blows everywhere, and we’ve been sneezing ever since.
In Lubbock we toured the National Ranching Heritage Center, on the campus of Texas Tech. The center has collected and restored 48 ranching structures including buildings, stockades, and windmills. The time frame is late 1700’s through early 1900’s.
The structures were placed in a park like setting, organized by year. We walked through the park and stopped to look in each building. They had interesting items of the period on display inside. Each structure had an informative plaque. My favorite, on a dugout building, said the inhabitants had to be careful when lighting the first fire of the season, because it drove the rattlesnakes out from under the fireplace.
This spudder is an oil well drilling machine. Drilling, in this context, is a bit of a misleading because this baby is a precision drill. It’s capable of drilling wells down to about 5000 feet.
Mesa Verde RV Park is about 5 miles outside of Lubbock on US 62. We were in the back section of the campground away from the road. Things were pretty quiet except for the construction right outside the back fence. Bathrooms were modern and very clean. Nice hot showers. Wi-Fi worked well.
