Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is located partway up a mountain at the mouth of a canyon, with beautiful views of the town of Alamogordo below and a glimmer of white sand in the distance. We were treated to a beautiful sunset and and great color on the rocks above the campground.

The park has a very nice desert garden, a visitor center showing the history of the park, a short trail through the bottom of the canyon, and a difficult trail up the mountain. We skipped that last one!

At night, a strong wind came down the canyon and rocked the van; we woke up several times wondering if we’d be tumbling down the hill. In the last photo, the thin white line at the base of the mountains is White Sands approximately sixteen miles away!

The campground was beautiful. Most sites were level in spite of the very hilly terrain. Bathrooms were clean and heated by solar panels. Views in both directions for 20 miles.
