Our visit to Waco started with a trip to America’s newest addition to the National Park system, Waco Mammoth National Monument. The mammoths here are columbian mammoths that when mature were more than 14 feet tall and weighed about 20000 pounds. Wooly mammoths, more common in the northern states, were smaller at 10-12 feet tall and only about 12000 pounds.
On Sunday, we were treated to lunch at 1424 Bistro by Charlie and Carolyn, Deb’s friends from grad school. After a wonderful lunch and great conversation, we introduced them to the boys, said our goodbyes and then everybody went off to watch the Super Bowl.
Midway Park is a COE campground on the western side of Waco. It’s convenient to downtown and other attractions. There was noticeable highway noise and one family that seemed to need a fire but didn’t quite know how to keep it burning that filled their “neighborhood” with smoke. The bathrooms needed a severe cleaning but it was due more to the people that made the mess than park staff not doing their job. Nice campground in a nice location on a beautiful lake.
